Introduction:
International communication as a human activity has existed for centuries. Today, the development in science and technology, especially the advancement in transportation and telecommunication has literally shrunk the world into a “global village”, where people of different colors and cultures can easily transcend the limits of time and space and get in touch with one another. It is through such increasing waves of cross-cultural contact that mankind has created our diverse yet prosperous world.
The removal of physical and even temporal barriers, however, cannot guarantee successful communication between people of different cultures: communication can bring people together, but culture may keep them apart. Scientific and technological progress, not only brings the global villagers into constant contact with one another, but also creates more opportunities for conflicts among them. Thus, various cases of cultural misunderstanding are becoming not at all unusual and some of them bring disastrous effect, even make the ever-increasing communication stop. This paper aims at seeking the reasons why we are likely to misunderstand people from other cultures through presenting and analyzing some classic cases, and at providing possible solutions to reduce cultural misreading.
Ⅰ. How Does Cultural Misreading Happen
A. Case study 1: Why does a minute’s silence become so harsh?
1. Story
My friend Richard is a Canadian teacher and he taught oral English at a Chinese university. He liked his work and enjoyed his life in China. Lately, however, he found that one of his classes awfully quiet and seemed unwilling to respond to whatever he asked. He felt uncomfortable with the quietness and could not figure out the reason. He tried everything: reorganizing teaching plans, constantly changing topics to interest them, telling jokes to lighten up the atmosphere etc.. But nothing worked. One week in his class, when he asked a question, like usual, no one responded. He then asked again, and he got nothing but silence. Then he asked the students whether they understood the question, still, no response. The whole class remained silent for another minute until he got frustrated and walked out of the classroom.
