Abstract
    Underground movies are a special group that touches the people, the nation and the culture’s sensitivity, but more often than not they truly reflect the feelings hidden in our deep heart---something we identify with, yet lack the courage to spit it out. Therefore underground movies became a bridge for creative and outspoken movie artists to display their thoughts and perspectives toward the world. This paper introduces the definition and attributes of underground movies, the sharp contrast between the situation of American and Chinese underground movies, and their social and cultural environments. The paper aims to raise people’s interest in appreciating underground movies and their awareness of the seriousness of creating an appropriate environment for them.

　　地下电影是一种特殊的电影类群，它触及一个民族，国家，甚至文化的敏感神经，而它又往往最能直接的反应人们心底认同却又没有勇气表达的感情。因此，地下电影就成为了那些才华横溢而又敢于表现自己的电影人向世界展示自己的个性想法和艺术视角的桥梁。本文介绍了地下电影的定义和特点，中美地下电影发展情况的差异，以及他们各自所处的社会和文化环境，旨在引起人们对地下影片的兴趣，以及唤醒国人认识到对地下电影艺术进行栽培的重要性。

Introduction
    Though never being able to compete with blockbusters, Underground movies are gaining more and more attention because of their unique shooting styles, bold plots, and peculiar story structures. Given the diversity of their culture, American underground movies are developing vibrantly whereas Chinese underground movies are still in the dark groping their way out. When digging the root of this problem, it’s not difficult for us to realize that there is not one simple answer to this question and this paper will give a detailed analysis.
