Literature Review
—— On Motivation and English Teaching
With the globalization of the world economy, the communication and exchanges among countries have been encouraged and strengthened. As a result, an increasing number of people begin to learn a foreign language, while English is becoming a universally used language in the world. There are many affective factors including personality, learning styles, social environment, motivation, attitude and so forth, which will affect second language acquisition. Among them, motivation is one of the most important factors in learning a second language. Therefore, it is vital for English teachers to understand students’ motivation so that they can adopt corresponding teaching methods to improve students’ motivation. To some degree, students’ motivation can be considered as the key point on the success of second language learning. This paper attempts to discuss the motivation factor and how to cultivate and arouse students’ motivation in their process of English learning, which will help language teachers be aware of the importance of motivation in language learning and improve their teaching efficiency and quality, and ultimately facilitate learners for greater achievement. Recently, I read extensively in an attempt to understand the factors that affect foreign language learning. A short list of books I have read, and a brief review of the literature that I have touched upon, are presented as follows:
